Pneumothorax is the accumulation of air or gas in the chest cavity, which can occur due to injuries, lung diseases, spontaneously, or for therapeutic purposes. For the lungs to function properly, the pressure in the pleural cavity must be lower than atmospheric pressure. When air enters this cavity, the pressure increases, leading to lung collapse and its exclusion from the breathing process.

Treatment of pneumothorax

Pneumothorax is an emergency condition that requires immediate medical intervention. With the help of specialized tools and basic knowledge, it is possible to provide first aid to the injured person.

Skilled care includes pleural puncture and probe thoracostomy. Treatment of pneumothorax is to release accumulated air from the chest cavity. Pleural puncture is performed by puncturing the chest wall and parietal pleura with a needle. Probe thoracostomy is performed for therapeutic and diagnostic purposes. The procedure helps to eliminate air and fluids accumulated in the pleural cavity.

Remedies for pneumothorax

Aids in the setting of pneumothorax:

  • decompression needle;
  • ventilated dressing;
  • non-ventilated dressing.

Pneumothorax needle

The valve pneumothorax needle is included with the catheter and is specifically designed for pre-hospital care. The versatility of the needle allows it to be used in adults with different body types.  Principle of use: after inserting the pneumothorax needle into the victim, the paramedic leaves the catheter in the chest cavity to remove free gas.

Occlusal dressing

When the chest or lungs are injured, the space inside fills with air. As the volume of air increases, pressure rises in the pleural cavity, causing the lung to collapse and breathing becomes difficult. To provide first aid for an open pneumothorax, it is necessary to cut off the access of air to the inside of the wound. For this purpose, special dressings are used - ventilated and non-ventilated occlusive dressings.

The use of an occlusive dressing is simple. Unventilated dressings are used for normal pneumothorax and ventilated dressings are used for valve pneumothorax. A ventilated occlusive dressing blocks air from entering the pleural cavity, but allows air that has already accumulated to escape.
